The Palo Verde College women's basketball team faced tough competition in their season-opening weekend, falling 34-60 to Pasadena City College and 55-89 to Fullerton College. Despite the losses, head coach Derrick Jackson remains optimistic about the team.
"I'm proud of how we competed, especially against Fullerton," said Jackson. "They're a playoff-caliber team, and once we figure out how to put together a complete game, we should be able to compete with anyone."
In the season opener against Pasadena, the Pirates' defense showed promise, but turnovers proved costly, with the team committing 15 in total. Sophomore Johanna Garcia had a standout performance, grabbing 12 rebounds and playing solid defense.
Against Fullerton, the Pirates faced a strong team known for their outside shooting. The Hornets shot 50% from the field, converting 36 of their 72 shots. Freshman Brookelyn Thomas led Palo Verde with an impressive 22-point performance.
While the opening weekend presented challenges, the team remains positive, especially this early in the season. The Pirates will look to regroup as they travel to participate in the West Los Angeles College Wild West Shootout on Friday, November 8.
